WHAT

Shenandoah Valley Organic is a branded and private label organic meat company that prides itself on treating farmers with dignity and respect, as well as having the highest standards for raising animals. Each of their animals are humanely raised on an organic diet free from animal byproducts and antibiotics, and each of their packaged products can be traced back to the farm where that animal was raised.

WHY

Shenandoah Valley Organic’s Farmer Focus business model allows farmers to be true partners: receiving fair compensation for their hard work and having the freedom to make decisions for their own businesses. Contracted farmers own their own chickens, funding the chick placement and feed for the entire life-cycle of each flock before selling the chickens to Shenandoah Valley Organic at a premium price-per-pound. Shenandoah Valley Organic then uses the purchasing volume of its group of farmers to negotiate feed and chick prices. This allows their business model to function efficiently while verifying traceability for chick and feed sourcing from consolidated contractors, and preserves the integrity of generational family farms by ensuring they are sustainable and profitable for the next generation.

Our investment in Shenandoah Valley Organic was driven by their Farmer Focus model for meat production. Through their deep commitment to farmers, animals, and environmental stewardship, Shenandoah Valley Organic produces high-quality, clean label, organic products, providing a healthy source of nutrition through the most humane, clean, and safe processes possible, all while providing greater economics to the farmer and protecting generational family farms.
